Today’s forecasted high temperature is 96 degrees. With the humidity, the heat index could top 109 degrees. Just another disgusting day under the heat dome.
So Uber, the sometimes-cheeky sedan- and taxi-dispatching company, is adding a third class of vehicles to its services today: ice cream trucks. In D.C. and 32 other cities around the world where it operates, Uber is partnering with frozen treat conveyors to provide cold confections on demand.
Between 11 a.m. and 5 a.m., users of Uber’s smartphone applications will be able to punch up an ice cream request, and the company will send a truck to that user’s location with five treats for $25. (Alternatively, you could book a sedan on Uber, have it ferry you to the nearest convenience store, and a Good Humor treat there for less than $25.)
Anyway, cute stunt for a summer day. Though, as we reminded Uber when it did this last year, ice cream trucks are a regulated industry in D.C., and we all know how much Uber loves to follow the rules. Just for reference, here are the District’s regulations concerning ice cream trucks. Might be good to brush up before 11:
