Someone dispatch a telegram and alert Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editor David Shribman: D.C. is about to get yet another promising sandwich place. On Friday, Mike Isabella, he of Top Chef-Graffiato-Bandolero-parties at Graffiato-Kapnos fame, will open G, an Italian sandwich shop at 2201 14th Street NW.

G, which is around the corner from Kapnos, which opened earlier this month, will feature modern takes on the beloved sandwiches of Isabella’s New Jersey childhood, such as a chicken parm made with a chicken leg gravy and meatball sub topped with a pork neck ragu. (In May, Isabella opened G Grab and Go, a quick version of the new concept, in a strip mall in Edison, N.J.)

In addition to the sandwiches, which also include wood-roasted meats and a breakfast sub made with duck eggs, G will also start serving tasting menu dinners on Aug. 3. The $40, reservation-only dinners will be served Wednesday through Saturday, with Sunday set aside for a “Sunday Gravy” meal, which Isabella bills as a re-creation of his family’s end-of-week meals featuring staples like calamari and spaghetti served with pomodoro sauce and a traditional meat gravy with meatballs, sausage, and pork shoulder.

For the restaurant’s first afternoon of service, sandwiches will cost $5 each, with proceeds going toward the American Cancer Society. After that, they’ll go for between $9 and $13.
