While no definitive answer has been provided, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier did speak about a possible connection for the first time Tuesday. While appearing on NewsChannel 8’s NewsTalk With Bruce DePuyt, Lanier said police are investigating whether or not the incidents are linked. “They certainly appear to be,” she said, later adding, “We believe [the acts] are connected.”
At least four locations in D.C. have been splattered with green paint, and in some cases feces, in recent days.
Jiamei Tian, 58, was arrested Monday for vandalizing the Washington National Cathedral and was charged with property destruction. Police say the woman may be homeless, while Lanier told Bruce DePuyt that Tian may have “some mental health issues.”
Green paint was discovered splattered at the base of the Lincoln Memorial early Friday. Later that day, according to Park Police, paint was found on the base of the Joseph Henry statue outside the Smithsonian Castle. The find was publicized yesterday, the same day when green paint, plus some feces, was found in two chapels at the National Cathedral.
(Update: The paint will be removed from the Joseph Henry statue today between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. with a paint remover, according to the Smithsonian.)
The Luther Place Memorial Church in Logan Circle was also hit by the feces-paint combo on Sunday. A statue of Martin Luther outside the church was also vandalized with green paint, which a parish administrator told the Post was noticed last Wednesday. Jack Reiffer also told the Post Tian has attended services at Luther Place.
