While most of 14th Street NW fills up with shiny new condominium buildings and high-end restaurants, the neighborhood, to many, is still very much anchored by the Black Cat. And now, the rock club, which has been at 1811 14th Street since 2001, has plans to make itself an even bigger presence on the block.
The Black Cat is applying for a substantial change to its liquor license, according to an application published today by the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration, by adding a third floor to its building and adding an additional 1,500-square foot bar. The application states that the third floor would be added “for extra dressing room and storage space,” though it does not specify exactly where the new bar would be located. The club currently has two bars in its main second-floor show space and the ground-floor Red Room.
Owner Dante Ferrando is out of town, a Black Cat employee says, and has not returned emails about the planned expansion. A public hearing on the planned expansion is scheduled for Sept. 30.
