Following the apparent suicides of four inmates since November 2012, the D.C. jail will now require every person to have a cellmate.

The Washington Post spoke to jail director Thomas N. Faust, who thinks the move will make it harder for inmates to commit suicide. According to the Post, only one or the four inmates who apparently committed suicide in recent months had a cellmate.

Mike Johnson, a 53-year-old charged with sexual assaulting a woman, was found dead in his cell Monday. As NBC4 reports, his death comes one month after Faust created a task force to “review mental health assessments and screenings.”

However, concerns about resources have been raised. D.C. police corrections union chairman John Rosser told the Washington Times “the jails are simply not equipped to deal efficiently with both the security and the mental health aspect,” adding officers are expected to “monitor, diagnose and recognize mental health issues.”
