>> Bassist Derrick Hodge anchors the genre-blending Robert Glasper Experiment, which is at the vanguard of the nu-jazz movement. He has also spent time in the cutting-edge jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard’s group, and is currently the music director for the R&B star Maxwell. Hodge is now stepping out on his own with his new release, Live Today. Hodge and his band will be launching the album on Thursday at Liv. 7:30 p.m. doors/8:30 p.m. show. >> The Stooges Brass Band is considered one of the elite groups playing in New Orleans today, so much so that it was chosen to serve as a musical ambassador in Pakistan for a 2012 tour. The ensemble will be playing an 8:30 p.m. show on Friday at Artisphere. General admission tickets are $20. Lounge level tickets in the balcony art gallery with private bar are $30. Arlington’s Bayou Bakery has partnered with Artisphere to offer patrons New Orleans specials before the show, including a “Brass Monkey” cocktail.

Haitian Rail, the group’s new album, has the underground jazz scene abuzz. >> Saxophonist Bill Evans joined Miles Davis’s band in 1980 at the tender age of 22. He used his time with the iconic trumpeter to launch a solo career in 1990 and he has been a bandleader ever since.
