A little bundle of expenses! Photo by Mr. T in D.C.

Are you ready for another ranking that tells you how expensive it is to live in D.C.? No? Well here it comes anyway.

Real estate site Redfin says the D.C. metro area is the 10th most expensive place to raise a baby during its first year of life. The ranking looked at the “average cost of upgrading from a two-bedroom home to a three-bedroom home” in 40 cities, as well as the “expense of childcare, healthcare, baby items and utilities.” Using these factors, Redfin calculates that it costs $29,800 to raise a baby for a year in D.C.

According to Redfin’s calculations, the most expensive factor in raising a baby in D.C. isn’t housing — it’s child care. Nine months of daycare will cost just over $11,000. Here’s the methodology Redfin used:

Redfin combined National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies childcare costs by state with childcare worker salaries by metro from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to get a more localized estimate of childcare costs by city. Since childcare doesn’t typically start until the baby’s third month, we estimated childcare costs for nine months of the year.

In front of D.C., the top ten cities for pricey baby-raising are San Jose, Santa Cruz, New York, San Francisco, Boston, San Diego, Santa Rosa, Oxnard and Los Angeles. The lesson here? Don’t have a baby in California, unless you’re flush with cash.
