Andy Shallal, the man behind Busboys and Poets, is thinking about running for mayor. Maybe. Possibly. He just doesn’t know yet!
The Washington Post first reported that Shallal held a “meeting of potential supporters and advisers” at the 14th Street NW location of Busboys yesterday. Shallal, who also owns Eatonville and loves left-wing and progressive causes, told the Post he is still considering if he will run, but if he did throw his hat in the ring it would probably be as a Democrat.
There are already five declared Democratic candidates for mayor: Councilmembers Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6), Muriel Bower (D-Ward 4) and Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), as well as former State Department aide Reta Jo Lewis and contractor Christian Carter. Mayor Vincent Gray, who led a recent poll commissioned by Wells, has yet to indicate if he will run for reelection.
Shallal later emphasized how preliminary the idea of a run is to the City Paper, saying, “If you don’t consider this lightly, then you’re stupid.”
