Early Sunday morning, a man was hit by an Orange Line Metro train on the tracks outside of the East Falls Church station and killed.

The Washington Post reports that the victim has been identified as Patrick Sibley, a 21-year-old George Mason University senior. In a statement, George Mason University Athletic Director Tom O’Connor said that the GMU community “is deeply saddened to hear of the death of Patrick Sibley,” who was a “world-class athlete,” and a “valued member of the GMU Volleyball team.”

Details are scarce as to how this tragic incident happened, but this is what we know so far:

According to Metro, Sibley was on the tracks between the East Falls Church and Ballston stops, just outside the East Falls Church station. He was hit shortly before 2 a.m. by an inbound Orange Line train.

DCist reached out to WMATA for more information about the incident, but a spokesperson says they aren’t releasing any information until a proper investigation to find out why Sibley was on the tracks is conducted. We’ll update when we learn more.
