Photo by Tomash. When the newly-announced 14th Street NW location of Amsterdam Falafelshop opens early next year, the spot will be bigger – and boozier – than its D.C. sister shop.
Arianne Bennett, co-owner of the popular Adams Morgan falafel joint, told DCist her team was looking at several properties across the city to open a new location in. The “darling” property at 1830 14th Street NW, which Bennett says reminds her of canal houses in Amsterdam, came up first.
“We love that neighborhood,” Bennett said, taking time out of her vacation to chat via Skype. “We’ve had people asking us to come for a long time to that street. … There’s so many families now living there that there’s this great mix of kids, business people, restaurants, and visitors to the city.”
“It feels homey like our community in Adams Morgan,” she added of the rapidly expanding corridor.
Bennett said many people from outside D.C. in areas like Silver Spring, Bethesda and Reston, for example, have asked for an Amsterdam Falafelshop to open there. Bennett said anyone who’s interested in opening a franchise location there should “come on down” and start one, adding later that they’re “picky” about who gets to franchise. There are already two Amsterdam Falafelshop franchises in Somerville, Mass. and Annapolis, Md.
Taking a cue from the Massachusetts location, Bennett said the 14th Street spot will be “next generation.” That means a little less gritty than the original Amsterdam Falafelshop.
Bennett said the 14th Street Falafelshop with have “a little bit more space” – “Not a lot more. Don’t get excited.” – and will have a better flow, as well as a longer food bar. There will also be a salad bar at this location for those who can’t, or don’t want to, eat bread.
At the 14th Street location, people will also be able to drink Dutch beer from a can, just like in Amsterdam, Bennett said.
So will your neighborhood be getting an Amsterdam Falafelshop soon? Maybe. Bennett said they’re looking at locations to open a third D.C. spot, but said it’s too early to say where. Fingers crossed for [insert your neighborhood here.]
