Last week saw not one, but two D.C. Fire and EMS ambulances catch fire. And while internal reports obtained by the Washington Post say the cause of both fires was “accidental,” Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier thinks that the whole thing stinks a tiny bit.

While appearing on NewsChannel 8’s NewsTalk With Bruce DePuyt, Lanier said the police investigation into the cause of the ambulance fires is ongoing, but that the fires seem “a little suspicious.” Initially, the fire union found some weird evidence—including parking signs and trucker’s mud flaps—of “unorthodox” materials used to repair engines, but still declared the recent fires as accidents.

Last week’s ambulance fires—one on Benning Road in S.E. and the other at Washington Hospital—is just the latest in a string of emergency vehicles that have had unusual and troublesome problems this month. On August 2, an ambulance went up in flames after dropping a patient off, and also last week, the ambulance following Obama’s motorcade ran out of gas.

What is going on here? Is there some sort of ambulance-tampering mad man terrorizing D.C.? Help us, Tommy Wells. You’re our only hope.
