The National Zoo will add three more elephants to its herd next spring.

Kamala, Swarna, and Maharani will arrive in D.C. next year on loan from the Calgary Zoo, thanks to a $2 million donation from Bethesda-based financier and philanthropist David M. Rubenstein. The ladies will join Ambika, the newly arrived Bozie, Shanthi and her son Kandula. According to the National Zoo, Kamala, Swarna, Bozie and Shanthi all spent time together at the same orphanage in Sri Lanka.

Like Bozie, who came to the National Zoo earlier this year, the three elephants will spend 30 days in quarantine before joining the herd on the $56 million Elephant Trails exhibit.
