Tomorrow morning, the National Zoo will reveal the sex and paternity of its new panda cub in a Maury-style spectacle that will involve large envelopes, throwing chairs and yelling. OK, most of that isn’t true.

But after 9 a.m. tomorrow, the world will know a little bit more about Butterstick II and the stillborn cub who prompted the Zoo to write the saddest press release ever. Butterstick’s father is either the National Zoo’s Tian Tian or the San Diego Zoo’s Gao Gao.

Meanwhile, Mei Xiang and Butterstick are doing well, cuddling and bonding in a den. Mei is also back to drinking water, as she consumed “64 ounces” of the liquid this morning, “though she turned down food,” the Zoo said in a tweet. “She seems to be enjoying her ‘den service!'”
