Forget about the amphitheater for a minute: The D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities is looking for an artist or team to create an installation at Chuck Brown Memorial Park.
The commission put out a request for proposals today, seeking an artist to create a “sculpture, statue, creative fence or wall, paving pattern” or other installation that “will serve as inspiration and a reminder of the cultural legacy of Go-Go that originated in this city to the residents of the neighborhood community and the broader Washington metropolitan area.” The entire budget for the project, which must “celebrate Chuck Brown as the inventor of a new musical form” and “uplift his remembrance and the musicians that continue in his footsteps as a unifier of people, using music and art as an equalizer,” is $325,500.
The city broke ground on Chuck Brown Memorial Park, formerly known as Langdon Park, which was originally supposed to have an amphitheater but won’t because of neighbor complaints in August. In addition to the installation, the park will have a memorial wall and toy drums.
Proposals are due by October 11. The dedication ceremony is planned for August of next year. For more information, go here.
