The Dismemberment Plan (Shervin Lainez/Partisan Records)

There’s still a full month until The Dismemberment Plan release their new album, Uncanney Valley—their first in 12 years—but at the rate they’re going, all of the songs may be available before then.

Yesterday, The D-Plan dropped another new single from the album, the spazzy, sentimental toe-tapper, “Daddy Was A Real Good Dancer.” In the song, the protagonist tells the story of his father who gave up on his passion of dancing when he became a father. Of course, as with most of Travis Morrison’s lyrics, dancing is a metaphor for something else. It could be anything, really. Whatever you want it to be.

Travis belts out the lyrics atop a breezy-but-spastic rhythm, courtesy of Joe Easley’s calculated beats and Jason Caddel’s twangy slide guitar. It’s kind of like the D-Plan’s version of a country song. Kind of.

Uncanney Valley drops on October 15, and The Dismemberment Plan play the 9:30 Club with Deleted Scenes and Paint Branch on October 19 & 20.
