Last night, Metropolitan Police responded to four separate shootings that occurred in D.C.—two in NW, one in NE, and one in SE—making it a particularly violent night in the District.
The first shooting occurred just before 9 p.m.:*[See editor’s note] Police responded to a shooting at the corner of 14th St. and S St. NW, right by the Logan Circle neighborhood. That block, which has seen substantial commercial growth in the past couple years with popular nightlife spots, is a densely populated area of 14th Street NW. An MPD spokesman tells DCist that the man’s condition is unknown, but he was conscious and breathing when EMS responded. Details about the shooting are scarce and the investigation is ongoing.
A reader sent us the above photo of the crime scene shortly after the shooting occurred.
The second shooting occurred at the 1200 block of Rock Creek Ford Rd., NW, at about 11:25 p.m. The MPD spokesperson tells DCist that the victim was a 16-year-old male, who had been shot in the stomach and buttocks, but his injuries didn’t appear to be life-threatening. The investigation is also ongoing.
The third shooting happened around 11:36 p.m. at the 5300 block of Dix St. NE. Police responded to an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, mostly in his lower extremities and is reportedly in extremely critical condition, the MPD spokesperson tells DCist. Police are still investigating.
Finally, the last shooting took place around 11:53 p.m. at 14th St. and Riggs Pl. NW. Police responded to an adult male who was shot in the leg while walking. Again, the investigation is ongoing.
Due to a reporting error and some confusion with the MPD, the original post misidentified the details of the last shooting.
The fourth shooting occurred in the 3900 block of Pennsylvania Ave. SE at around 3 a.m. WJLA reports that “the adult male victim was shot in the abdomen and was conscious and breathing when police arrived.” The investigation is ongoing.
“It is really unusual that we have this many shootings in 24 hours,” the MPD spokesperson said, “but we’re investigating thoroughly and at this time, we don’t see any correlation between the shootings.”
Stay safe out there, D.C.
[*Editor’s Note: Some readers have rightly objected to the use of the phrase “probably the most disquieting” in this sentence, which has been removed. The phrase was used to note that 14th Street NW is very busy during the early evening hours, and the potential for bystanders being injured by shootings is high. All shootings in D.C. are equally tragic. We apologize for the word choice.]
