The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, in partnership with the D.C. government, has set up two funds in response to the Navy Yard shooting Monday.
Mayor Vincent Gray made the announcement Wednesday morning at his fall legislative agenda briefing.
In a statement, Community Foundation president Terri Lee Freeman said “We believe that as a community, we have the power and responsibility to address both the immediacy of the impact of yesterday’s tragedy, and make an effort to prevent anything like this from plaguing us in the future.”
One fund will give money directly to victims’ families, and the other will address long-term gun violence and mental health issues. Here’s more information via the Community Foundation.
The Navy Yard Relief Fund will support the victims’ families and those injured in the attack. This fund will provide direct support where it is most urgently needed in the short-term to assist our neighbors as they heal. 100% of contributions to the fund will support the victims’ families and those injured. The Safer Communities Fund will address the long-term, systemic challenge of violence in our region. As a community foundation – and as residents of the region – we believe it is our duty to do all we can to help make our community a more healthy, safe, and stable place to live. Thus, the Safer Communities Fund will support nonprofit organizations that offer mental health services and reduce gun violence in our community. Click here to contribute.
The Community Foundation managed the $25 million Survivors’ Fund established to support those affected by 9/11 attack on the Pentagon.
