>> Veronneau, the 2013 WAMMIE winners for Best Jazz Group, moves effortlessly from samba to gypsy jazz. The group is built around the vocalist Lynn Veronneau, whose nimble voice allows her to sound authentic in a number of styles. >> There aren’t many guitarists who have a more unique and personalized technique than Stanley Jordan. His tapping style gives him a full sound that allows him to explore the full harmonic and melodic possibilities of any given piece. On Thursday, Jordan will begin a 4-night stand of solo 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley. Tickets $25 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> Saxophonist Bruce Swaim will lead his group on Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets $5. After the show, the venue will host a screening of Edward R. Murrow’s documentary in which the revered journalist documented Louis Armstrong’s 55-56 world tour.
>> Having released three albums to critical acclaim, Sachal Vasandani has successfully made the transition from rising star to established jazz vocalist. His easy-going delivery provides a good contrast to the exceptional rhythm section that he uses. Vasandani will be at the Mansion at Strathmore on Friday for 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. sets. >> Bassekou Kouyate is one of the true masters of the ngoni, an ancient traditional lute found throughout West Africa. He will be leading a band on Friday at the Atlas. 8 p.m. Tickets $20 to $34.
>> We here at DCist don’t try to hide the fact that Cassandra Wilson is our favorite jazz vocalist working today. She employs her smokey voice with the technique of a highly schooled jazz singer without losing the deep rooted blues of her native Mississippi. >> Bruce Williams has carved an impressive career as a sideman, having played saxophone with Roy Hargrove, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and other notables. >> Houston Person is not as well known as many of his contemporaries, but he is one of the finest saxophonists to come out of the soul jazz era. He is still going strong, even at the age of 78, and will be at Bohemian Caverns on Friday and Saturday. 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. Tickets $20 in advance/$25 at the door.
>> Baltimore-based pianist Darius Scott will lead a group on Friday at HR-57. 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets $15. On Saturday, the club hosts Latin jazz pianist Chuchito Valdes. 9:45 p.m. to 1 a.m. $25.
>> Guy Davis is a musician-composer-storyteller who revives the traditions of acoustic blues through the material of the great blues masters, African American stories, and his own original works. He will be on the Millennium Stage this Saturday. 6 p.m. Free.
>> CapitalBop starts three-week residency at the G40 Art Summit. For each of the next three Sunday’s, CapitalBop is presenting music at the event from 4 to 6 p.m. Acts included The Young Lions, Kneebody, Joe Herrera, Greg Boyer and Akua Allrich. Free.
>> Maria Schneider is one of the most influential and accomplished big band leaders in modern jazz, which is no small feat given the economics behind supporting large ensembles. She will be leading her orchestra on Sunday at the University of Maryland’s Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. 7 p.m. Tickets $10 to $40.
>> Based out of Richmond, trumpeter Victor Haskins won numerous accolades while in college. Now he is trying to establish himself as a working bandleader and on Sunday he will team up with some of D.C.’s finest through 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Twins Jazz. Tickets $10 plus food and drink minimum.
>> Blue Monday Blues hosts singer Little Royal. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.
>> On Tuesday, saxophonist Brad Linde concludes his run as September’s Artist-in-Residence at Bohemian Caverns. This performance will feature the experimental guitar/cello duo, Janel & Anthony. 7:30 p.m. Tickets $10 online/$15 at the door.
>> Saxophonist Andrew White is nothing short of a local legend. He has been performing or recording for over 50 years with a who’s who of jazz greats, and he is also considered among the world’s foremost authorities on the music of John Coltrane.
