A pitbull was shot by police in the 2500 block of Benning Road NE this morning.
A Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson said the pitbull was involved in a “violent skirmish” with a poodle. Another MPD representative said police were dispatched to the scene at around 10:05 a.m. At some point, officers shot the pitbull.
The crime scene is being processed and the officer-involved shooting is under investigation. The MPD representative did not know the condition of the dog. But Pat Bahn, who first tweeted about the incident, said on Twitter it was a “canine fatality” and later tweeted a photo of a deceased dog.
Update: Here’s the latest on the poodle’s condition, via NBC4.
The poodle was taken to Friendship Animal Hospital, where it’s in critical condition, said Dr. Ashley Gallagher. The poodle will undergo surgery.
A good Samaritan is paying for part of the surgery, and the hospital will cover the rest, Gallagher said
