An assault that occurred at an Adams Morgan tavern in late August is now a homicide.

Rockwell John Flint, a 45-year-old former middle school teacher from Northwest D.C., died Friday from “multiple blunt impact injuries,” according to an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Police say Flint was found at the bottom of the stairs at the Rendezvous Lounge “unconscious and unresponsive” on August 30 at around 1:56 a.m.

His death is now being investigated as a homicide.

Flint was injured after he tried to subdue an unruly man who had attacked someone with a glass, the Post reported. Said unruly patron was identified by police as 37-year-old James Wood, who has been convicted of robbery and assault in the past. Wood was originally charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. According to court records, Wood is currently at the D.C. Jail and has been found competent to stand trail. He is scheduled to appear in court on October 10.

After the assault, the Rendezvous Lounge was temporally ordered shuttered by Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier for four days.
