Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier said today that a second officer was shot during the shooting at the Navy Yard.
On NewsTalk with Bruce DePuyt, Lanier said an officer took two rounds to the chest during a confrontation with the gunman. The bullets were stopped by a vest.
“We are extremely lucky that we didn’t lose a police officer in there as well,” she said. “Through the training and exercising and all the things we’ve done over the past several years to prepare for something as tragic as this, we were able to save some lives. Wish we could have saved more.”
MPD officer Scott Williams was shot in the legs and is hospitalized in good condition at MedStar Washington. He was one of eight people injured during last week’s shooting, which claimed 12 lives.
