At least 23 people have died in D.C. traffic crashes so far this year, up from 12 at the same time last year.
Metropolitan Police Department data crunched by AAA reveals a 91.6 percent rise in car-related deaths, with four fatalities occurring in July alone.
July was a particularly deadly month on District roadways, an analysis of MPDC traffic data by AAA Mid-Atlantic reveals. At least four traffic fatalities occurred that month, including a 49-year-old driver who perished on July 30th after the vehicle he was driving struck a chain-link fence in the 4200 block Benning Road, N.E. before coming to a rest on top of three parked vehicles. A day earlier on July 29th, a collision on the 3000 block of Wisconsin Avenue, N.W. claimed the life of a 28-year-old motorcyclist riding a Kawasaki Ninja.
July’s deathly toll includes two persons on foot: a 37-year-old pedestrian who was struck by a dump truck at the intersection of 4th and Massachusetts Avenue, N.W. Although the incident occurred June 18, she finally and fatally succumbed to her injuries on July 29. A 30-year-old woman lost her life on July 25 after she was struck by an SUV while she was attempting to cross the 500 block of Eastern Avenue, N.E. from the Maryland side of the roadway, a review of MPD news releases shows.
This summer, the D.C. Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Councils called for more speed cameras to be installed for safety reasons just days after new mom Georgette Jones was struck and killed by an SUV. In August, MPD announced they would do just that by doubling the number of photo enforcement cameras.
Last year, there were 19 traffic fatalities in D.C., which “bucked a national trend,” according to AAA. That number was 32 in 2011 and 25 in 2010.
