Here’s a distinction no Metro station wants: Being named the most dangerous so far this year.
The Brookland Metro station saw the most crime from January to August of this year, with 44 crimes reported, according to an October security report. System wide, Deanwood came in second (41) followed by Minnesota Avenue (40), Gallery Place (35), Rhode Island Avenue (34), L’Enfant Plaza (33), Capitol Heights (33), Benning Road (30), West Hyattsville (28) and Vienna (28).
When narrowed to just D.C., Fort Totten (27), Georgia Ave-Petworth (26) and Union Station (23) enter the top ten.
According to Metro, 59 percent of all crimes are cell phone snatches, with 450 cases reported until August of this year as compared with 327 during the same period last year. Also up are bicycle thefts, of which there were 303 during the January to August period this year compared to 202 last year.
“Bicycle theft is a crime of opportunity, with the same kind of lucrative pay off as cell phones,” the Metro report states. “The [Metro Transit Police Department] has partnered with other Metro offices to address this crime. A secure bike facility has been opened at College Park station, and other planned at Metro stations with high bicycle ridership. This summer, MTPD created and distributed new crime prevention literature, gave away bicycle locks, and introduced a Metro bicycle registration program. Over 600 bikes have been registered since the registration web page launched.”
“Force & Violence” and armed crimes have also seen a slight increase. There have been 71 reports of sexual harassment system wide, with 29 classified as criminal.
Of the 71 reports, Metro says ten “were formally reported to the MTPD as offense reports and actively investigated; in the remaining 61 reports, either the victim did not want to pursue a formal report, no actual crime was committed, or the victim wanted to remain anonymous. Nine reports from the web page were not related to sexual harassment.”
