Another day, another woman gives birth in a less than ideal place in or around D.C. This time, the gridlocked nightmare that is the Beltway.
Early this morning, a woman traveling along the Outer Loop of the Beltway, pulled over right near the Route 123 exit by Tyson’s Corner in Virginia, because she was going into labor.
Fairfax County emergency crews responded to the scene to transport the woman — whose name has not yet been released — to an area hospital. However, they had to pull over a few minutes later to deliver the child.
Fairfax County paramedic Jeffrey Kutner, who was part of the response team, says when the emergency crew first arrived, there weren’t any signs that the mother was actively in labor — but things quickly changed.
A couple minutes later, the woman gave birth to a boy, right there on the side of the road. The woman and child are reportedly both doing fine, thanks in part to reading.

Kutner says the birth couldn’t have happened at a better time. Fairfax County paramedics’ continuing education topic this month is titled “Prehospital Childbirth without Complications.”
