A Virginia mother is defending her indefensible decision to dress her son as a member of the Ku Klux Klan for Halloween.

Jessica Black of Craigsville, Va. told WHSV that it is a family tradition to dress as a Klansman for Halloween, so she allowed her seven-year-old son to do so. The child told the news station he wanted to dress that way because “it was cool,” adding later that he first saw the “costume” in the film adaptation of Fried Green Tomatoes.

Black told WHSV there’s nothing wrong with the costume: “It’s supposed to be white with white. Black with black. Man with woman and all of that. That’s what the KKK stands for. The KKK every year, raises money to donate to the St. Jude’s.”

The reporter ended the story by noting that the child involved is too young to truly understand the racial implications of his costume. Now let’s all go have a cry.
