Here’s something seemingly pulled right from a primetime police procedural show: The Metropolitan Police Department announced today they’ve made an arrest in a cold case homicide from 1984.
According to a release, MPD arrested 55-year-old Joe Anthony Barber of Woodbridge in connection to the murder of 43-year-old Rachel Cox. On Sunday, January 1, 1984, officers “responded to a call for an unconscious female inside the 3300 block of 6th Street, SE. Upon arrival, they located an adult female that appeared to have been the victim of a sexual assault and stabbing.” The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later determined that the cause of death was from multiple stab wounds.
The release states that after a “comprehensive investigation,” members of the MPD’s Homicide Branch, Cold Case/Major Case Unit, along with help from the Bode Technology Group, the Department of Forensic Sciences, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, were able to gather enough evidence to obtain an arrest warrant for Barber. He’s being charged with first degree felony murder.
