Vancouver’s Young Galaxy originally formed as a duo, comprised of Stephen Ramsay and Catherine McCandless, but quickly formed into a full band. The band got signed to the Broken Social Scene-run Arts and Crafts label and put out their self-titled debut record in 2007. Taking influence from dream-pop bands of the 80’s, that record was serviceable, but the debut was a rough sketch of what the band would become. After a stronger but still similar sophomore record, the band hit their stride with their third record, 2011’s Shapeshifting. Like the album’s title, the band went through a much-needed metamorphosis by shedding some of their dream-pop markers and adding in more dancey elements from 80’s synth-pop groups. This all was aided by Balearic disco veteran Dan Lissvik. By making the switch, McCandless took over all the vocal duties and the band became a stronger unit.
This year Young Galaxy released a follow-up record, Ultramarine, again produced by Lissvik. The album maintained the synth-pop sound of it’s predecessor, but is backed up with stronger hooks and tighter melodies. The lead single, “Pretty Boy,” is the best song the band has ever produced, as well as one of the best tracks of the year. It’s also a perfect entry point to the band. Like many twee songs, the track is sunny on the outside, but painful on the inside. Recounting the loss of a someone, the track has a cheery electronic beat with a hyper catchy chorus.
