D.C.’s first two Walmart stores will open on December 4.

According to a release, the stores at 99 H Street NW and 5968 Georgia Avenue NW will open at 8 a.m. on that date. Approximately 300 people were hired to work at each location, and more than 23,000 applications were received.

‘Twas a hard road to get to the arrival of the first two of six planned Walmart locations in D.C. A Council battle over requiring the big box retailer to pay a minimum wage of $12.50 an hour led to a threats to cancel plans for three of the stores and a mayoral veto. We’re waiting to hear back from a Wal-Mart spokesperson regarding how much associates will be paid at the two stores.

Update: Wal-Mart spokesperson Amanda Henneberg says that an average wage will be released at a later date. In Virginia, the average wage is $12.39, and in Maryland it’s $12.10. These numbers are for “regular, full-time hourly associates in Walmart Discount Stores, Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets” as of July.
