Virginia State Senator Creigh Deeds and his son, Gus, were apparently involved in an altercation this morning before the former was stabbed, state police said at a 3 p.m. press conference.

Early this morning, police responded to a call at Deeds’ Bath County residence, where they found the senator suffering from multiple stab wounds and his son suffering from a gunshot wound. According to Virginia State Police, Deeds allegedly got into an altercation with his 24-year-old son, Gus. Police are still trying to piece together the sequence of events, but said at the press conference that they’re now investigating the incident as a potential attempted murder-suicide.

Gus reportedly had a mental-health evaluation on Monday under an emergency custody order, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. He was released because there were reportedly no psychiatric bed could be located across a wide area of western Virginia.

Some details as to this morning’s events are coming to light, however. According to police, after the stabbing, Deeds reportedly left the scene on foot and walked down the hill of his residence to the nearby Route 42, where one of his cousins spotted him. The cousin drove Deeds to his residence nearby and called 911.

Deeds suffered several stab wounds to the head and upper torso. When police arrived at his residence, they found Gus suffering from life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound, but were unable to revive him. He died at the scene.

Initially listed as serious, Deeds’ condition has been upgraded to fair, according to a hospital spokesperson.
