Virginia state senator and former gubernatorial nominee Creigh Deeds is in serious condition from stab wounds after police found him and a deceased person in his Bath County home this morning.

According to a news release, Virginia State Police responded to Deeds’ home at 7:25 a.m., where they found the senator critically injured and another shot dead. The other person is thought to be his son, according to multiple outlets, but police have not confirmed that.

Deeds was transported to UVA Hospital in Charlottesville for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the assault, and a criminal investigation is ongoing. Va. Gov. Bob McDonnell released the following statement:

“In this tough and sad time, our thoughts and prayers are with the Deeds family. The news from this morning is utterly heartbreaking. Creigh Deeds is an exceptional and committed public servant who has always done what he believes is best for Virginia and who gives his all to public service. He cares deeply about Virginia, and the people of Virginia care deeply for him. I urge all Virginians today to join me in praying for a full and complete recovery for Creigh and for many more years of his public service to the Commonwealth. At this moment, our state unites in prayer for Creigh Deeds and his family.”

Other Virginia politicians, including Virginia governor-elect Terry McAuliffe, tweeted well-wishes.

Update: In a press conference, Virginia State Police say that the incident happened this morning, shortly before the call came in. It’s still early in the investigation, but police have confirmed that the other person found dead at the scene was Deeds’ oldest son, Gus Deeds. He died of a gunshot wound. According to police, they are not looking for other suspects in this investigations, and they aren’t ruling out that Gus Deeds’ gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

At the time police arrived on the scene, Creigh Deeds was reportedly conscious and able to communicate with investigators. He remains in serious condition.

Update 2: The incident is now being investigated as a potential attempted murder/suicide.
