Mayor Vincent Gray announced today that the city with raise its commitment to create and keep affordable housing by $87 million, bringing the total pledged to $187 million.
“As our city continues to grow and evolve, it is critical that we do everything we can to ensure the economic diversity of our city and to protect our long-time residents from being pushed out,” Gray said in a release. “The commitment we are delivering on today helps guarantee the District remains a welcoming place to residents of all income levels – and my administration will continue to make these important investments in building and maintaining our vibrant and diverse neighborhoods.”
According to a release, 2,521 affordable housing units have been completed since Gray took office, and 2,770 units have closed or are currently under construction. The additional $87 million is projected to provide or maintain 3,200 units, while another 3,130 are expected to be delivered between fiscal years 2017 and 2020.
Gray pledged the $100 million for 10,000 affordable housing units during his State of the District address earlier this year.
The announcement was made in Takoma, which, as Housing Complex points out, will be home to two affordable housing projects. Gray also announced today that Microsoft will come to the St Elizabeths campus as part of the innovation center and discussed his disappointment with the NCPC’s vote on the Height Act.
