Art Yards—a month-long massive public installation project happening in the 42-acre Yards development along the Anacostia River—formally kicked off today with a big paint-pour this morning.

Some background on the Art Yards project, in case you’re not familiar: The Yards arranged for seven artists to transform the “monolithic former NGIA [National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency] building,” located on the Southeast waterfront, into a public arts project by, well, doing whatever they want with it before the building is demolished this winter. The artists involved in the project include Hawaii-based artist Jasper Wong, D.C.’s Kelley Towles, Australian-based couple Dabs Myla, and 3D acrylic/chalk street artist murals of Baltimore.

For the next month, you’ll be able to catch the different artists transform the building before it gets torn down for good. The schedule:

  • November 14 – 19: Hawaii based artist Jasper Wong
  • November 20: Kick-off paint splash
  • November 15 – 26: DC based artist Kelley Towles
  • November 22 & 23 at 9 p.m.: Silent Disco
  • November 23 – 29: Australian based couple Dabs Myla
  • November 18 – Dec 7: 3-D Acrylic/Chalk Street Artist Murals of Baltimore
  • December 7 – 8: Parking lot chalk art event for kids and families
  • December 12 – 14: Final unveiling of completed murals, chalk installations, and light show by NY based mapping video artist trio 3_Search

The NGIA building is located at M and First Streets SE.
