Disco made a big return this year with Daft Punk’s backwards looking Random Access Memories. Daft Punk is not the only revivalist band and they aren’t the first to mine disco sounds. Disco has been making a comeback in dance circles for years, and one of the best new disco acts, NYC’s Escort, is playing Black Cat tonight. Escort is the brain child of Dan Balis and Eugene Cho, though the two are not the band’s sole members. In a live setting, the band can swell into a 17-piece machine. They released their debut record in 2011 and have been touring ever since. This year the band released two new singles: the laid back and funky “Barbarians” and “Cabaret.” The latter is a tight number that has the build-up qualities of ABBA’s “Gimmie Gimmie Gimme! (A Man After Midnight).” The synths are modern sounding but the disco string and horns recall the ’70s in a good way.
Escort plays tonight with JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound and Simon Phoenix at the Black Cat. Tickets are $15 Adv and $18 at the door.
