Tomorrow night, D.C.-native, New York-based indie rock band The Walkmen will musically christen Union Market’s event venue, Dock 5. It may also be the last time they play the venue, or D.C. for that matter, because the band says they’re going on an indefinite hiatus following tomorrow’s concert and a show in Philly next week.

In an interview with the Washington Post’s Express, bassist/organist Peter Bauer said that the group “has no immediate plans to continue as The Walkmen after shows in Washington on Saturday and Philadelphia.” Bauer says that this is will be a “pretty extreme hiatus,” and that the band has “no future plans whatsoever.” More from the Post’s interview:

“We really just have no idea,” Bauer says. “I don’t think any of us wanted to write another Walkmen record. Maybe that will change down the line, maybe it won’t, maybe we’ll play shows. I think it’s weird to make a hubbub about something if there’s nothing to really make a hubbub about. At the same time, I don’t think we’ve been a gang properly for a long time, so there’s not much to break up, I guess.”

The Walkmen—comprised of guitarist/pianist Paul Maroon, organist/bassist Walter Martin, drummer Matt Barrick, bassist/organist Peter Bauer, and singer/guitarist Hamilton Leithauser—formed in 2000 in New York City (all but Bauer are from the D.C. area and attended St. Albans), and have released seven studio albums in their fourteen years as a band.

The last prominent D.C. band to announce they were going on an “indefinite hiatus” was Fugazi, and, well, we’re still awaiting a reunion. Sigh.

Anyway, you can catch The Walkmen for (perhaps) the last time in D.C. tomorrow at Union Market’s Dock 5. Tickets and info here.
