St. Elizabeths East Campus—a gateway pavilion in Ward 8 that boasts gathering spaces and can host food trucks and a farmer’s market— may have quite a first winter. According to documents filed by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, D.C. is looking to rent three seasonal snow slides and specialty winter lights for the holiday season, as the Washington Business Journal first reported.

The gateway pavilion, which is located at 2700 Martin Luther King Avenue SE, was built to bridge the neighboring Anacostia and Congress Heights communities. According to the documents, the D.C. government is “seeking a contractor to provide rental of a temporary seasonal snow slide and specialty winter lights at the Gateway Pavilion on the St. Elizabeths East Campus,” and a pre-proposal conference is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. Snow slides are basically what they sound like: A slide packed with snow for sledding and sliding.

A DMPED spokesperson didn’t immediately return DCist’s request for more information about the proposal, but the WBJ s reporting that “the slide and lights will be operational from December through the end of January. Hours of operation will be worked out later, and the slides will be free to use.”

Deputy Mayor Victor Hoskins told WBJ that they entertained the idea of creating an ice rink their, but that ultimately proved too costly. Plus, you know, D.C. is in no shortage of ice rinks. Also, in our relatively flat city, snow slides are a welcomed addition for fun winter activity enthusiasts.
