A Teamster-affiliated Taxicab association says they’ve secured another extension from the D.C. government.
A release states that drivers have been granted an extension from December 1 to at least January 15 to install backseat passenger consoles because of a shortage in stock. The D.C. Taxicab Commission confirmed this in a press release, saying “This decision is the result of delays with the delivery of equipment.”
The association, formed earlier this year in the face of new regulations, is touting this as “major victory.”
“This is great news for our drivers and we will continue to monitor the situation to get the deadline extended further if the supply of consoles is not fully available,” Ferline Buie, president of Teamsters Local 922, said in a release. “We will continue to fight to protect the drivers’ interests.”
As part of new modernization regulations, cabs were also required to have new dome lights installed by November 1. According to DCTC, 5,889 have been installed and approximately 700 more are in stock. The Teamsters-Taxi association says they “secured an agreement that drivers with proof of a dome light installation appointment will not be subject to citation or impoundment while traveling to their appointment.” The DCTC clarifies that, while these vehicles won’t be impounded, they can’t carry passengers until they have a dome light.
