The friends and family of one of the Navy Yard shooting victims, Gerald “Jerry” Read, have set up a scholarship fund in his honor.

According to a release, classmates of Read, who was 58 when he was killed, wanted to “do something to honor their classmate,” and decided “setting up a scholarship fund in his name is the best way to do it.” The Gerald “Jerry” Read Scholarship fund will be awarded to one Eagle Scout who graduates from Clearfield High School—Read’s alma mater—each year.

During the tragic September 16 shootings, Read—an Eagle Scout himself—reportedly “pushed a co-worker beneath a desk, barricaded her in and pulled a partition into the gunman’s path,” effectively saving her life.

The first award—for $1,000—will be awarded in May this year, but Frank Barba, a friend and classmate of Read’s, says the amount will change each year, depending on the funding. You can donate to the scholarship fund through this website. Jerry’s brother, Dave, said in the release that he “was very proud of being an Eagle Scout,” and “thinks the scholarship is the perfect way to honor him.
