Pacman and Peso. Via Kickstarter.

In September, local rappers Pacman and Peso launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a trip to North Korea so they could film a music video.

Yes, it seemed like a ludicrous idea and, even after the crowdfunding campaign reached its goal, still seemed like a long shot, given how difficult it is to get into the mostly closed-off country. But, they pulled it off. In an interview with The Guardian, the two young rappers from Congress Heights and Landover, Md. reveal some of the more eye-opening experiences of the trip and discuss how, exactly, they got there. Mostly, it happened because of the help of a 41-year-old hedge fund manager who “has poured millions of dollars in Mongolia, and also has business interests in North Korea,” and is a fan of the rap duo.

Despite the large media attention the duo received before their trip, they managed to navigate North Korea mostly unnoticed, and filmed their music video on the down-low, without causing much of a stir. Check out the video for “Escape to North Korea” below.
