Off the bat, “Odd Numbers,” the new single from local experimental indie-rock band Young Rapids, kind of sounds like a tropical island ditty for the digital age. The low-key electronic groove at the beginning of the track evokes a kind of laid-back ethereal soundscape. Something you’d enjoy under the neon orange glow of a seaside sunset. But once Dan Gleason’s vocals kick in, the song wades further into the electronic soundscape, experimenting with some funky grooves that cull from a variety of influences.

The band has a new album, Pretty Ugly, dropping later this spring, and if “Odd Numbers” is any indication, it could be the kind of subdued, but exhilarating blend of indie rock and electronic you can get lost in for hours.
