>> Critics across the country have praised area guitarist Anthony Pirog‘s sonic alchemy. In addition to his work with Janel & Anthony and numerous performances as a sideman, notably with former Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, he also leads various groups of his own. He will be performing on Thursday at the Atlas with bassist Michael Formanek and drummer Ches Smith. >> John Lee‘s virtuoso abilities on the guitar have led him to become one of the area’s most in-demand musicians. He will be at the Velvet Lounge on Thursday to lead his own band that includes another DCist fave, saxophonist Matt Rippetoe. Lee will be playing tunes from his forthcoming album, to be released later this year. 9 p.m. Tickets $10.

>> D.C.-based drummer Kevin Peter Jones has assembled a group of internationally renowned musicians to play a four-night stand with him at Blues Alley. The group includes trumpeter Randy Brecker, saxophonist Eric Marienthal and keyboardist Jeff Lorber. The band’s run starts on Thursday. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $37.75 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> Benito Gonzalez took the D.C. jazz scene by storm in the early 2000s when he moved to this area from his native Venezuela. He moved to New York several years ago, leading his own bands and playing with a number of jazz greats, but still pays regular visits to our fair city. >> Celebrated trumpeter Roy Hargrove brings his progressive jazz ensemble, RH Factor, to Kennedy Center‘s Crossroads Club on Saturday. With this ensemble, Hargrove performs a high energy mix of soul, jazz, funk, and hip-hop. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $30.
>> Todd Marcus‘s blend of straight-ahead jazz and influences from his Egyptian heritage, combined with his use of the bass clarinet as his vehicle of expression, make him one of the more compelling voices in Baltimore’s jazz scene.
