Speedy Ortiz might have a decently big following, but that doesn’t mean they are too big for a house show. The Mass. four piece jolted the ’90s back into vogue with their debut album Major Arcana, doing fresh takes on the Matador Catalog, namely Pavement, Liz Phair, and Chavez. The band is releasing a four song EP, Real Hair, on February 11 and tonight they play The Dougout, a small house venue. Real Hair isn’t a departure for Speedy but a sharpening of their skills. “Everything’s Bigger” has a riff of a Pavement song but with some major oomph. Singer Sadie Dupuis’s lyrics are sharp as always, and the band brings some tough muscle for her to chew through.
Speedy Ortiz play tonight with Grass Is Green, Two Inch Astronaut and Collapser (ed-note: Dcist Matt’s band) at the Dougout. $5-$7 donations are strongly encouraged.
