The National Park Service will hold a public meeting next month to discuss the proposed installation of parking meters on parts of the Mall, where public parking is currently free.

In a notice, the National Mall and Memorial Parks says the meters will encourage turnover, “allowing more visitors access to park sites,” and “the use of public transit and other transportation alternatives,” as well as provide revenue “to improve and make more affordable visitor transportation related activities inside the park.” The meters would be the same single machine system used in D.C.

According presentation on the proposal, parking meters will be implemented sometime this year after six months of civic engagement. NAMA will partner with the city to start a National Mall Circulator route that would begin service in 2015.
