Here’s a happy/sad dog story to begin your morning: Alexandria firefighters are raising money for the vet bills of four dogs rescued from a house fire earlier this week.
According to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, several firefighters are assisting two displaced occupants of a Mount Vernon townhouse destroyed by a fire and four dogs — three Bernese Mountain dogs and a Corgi — that lived there. A fourth Bernese Mountain dog died in the fire.
Both occupants have been displaced, with one of the occupants still hospitalized (the owner of the surviving dogs), with the other occupant finding it very challenging to care for the surviving dogs. Because he is displaced, he has found it difficult to find temporary homes for the dogs, and also pay for the mounting veterinary bills that continue to pile up as some of the dogs still need medical care.
Two firefighters that also have Bernese Mountain dogs have taken upon themselves to personally do what they can to provide relief for the dogs and occupants alike, reaching out through their own personal social media platforms.
WJLA reports that the medical bills could reach $20,000. A donation page has raised $5,700 from 100 supporters.
The fire is under investigation.
