Hospitality’s self-titled debut album was released in 2012, but the track that formed it dated back to 2008. The record was complete a year prior, and it took the band some time to find a label willing to put it out. By the time the album did arrive, most in the indie-pop scene knew the songs well, as Hospitality had been playing them for years. When the album did get picked up by Merge, the world got a peek into the mind of band leader Amber Papini, who — much like Eleanor Friedberger — writes stories about other people. Like Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, Papini also went to an Ivy League school, Yale, and has a similar world view. With the band’s second album, Trouble, out this week, Hospitality focuses less on other people and more on themselves, while expanding their sonic palette by adding more synths and left-turns. “Rockets and Jets” is an ’80s number that bathes Papini’s voice in reverb. The track is more tough than anything Hospitality has done before, but for all the dark synths, the track still has a lightness.
Hospitality play tomorrow night with Soccer Team and Golden Looks at the Rock and Roll Hotel. Tickets are $12.
