The family of Medric “Cecil” Mills — the man who suffered a fatal heart attack near a Northeast fire station but was apparently not aided by firefighters — has called for the firings of people involved with the incident.

Karen Evans, an attorney from the Cochran Firm, said of the longtime Department of Parks and Recreation employee, “It is especially tragic, in my view, that someone who gave so much and for so long to the city, when the city he loved and served failed to come to his aid when he needed them.”

“Change must come,” Evans said, adding that reviews and task forces aren’t enough. “It is time for action and time that the District allowed itself to be held accountable for these egregious acts.”

Evans called on Mayor Vince Gray and the Council to change the “public duty doctrine” to make it easier for D.C. to be held liable in cases like this.

“We want someone to take the blame for this tragedy and for those responsible to be held accountable,” Mills’ son Medric said. “We are publicly calling for change in how the D.C. Fire and EMS Department operates and how it’s help accountable.”

He asked for the firefighters and staff members involved in the incident to be named and fired. It would be “inappropriate” to ask the Mills family about a lawsuit at this time, Evans said.

A candlelight vigil for Mills will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at the Brentwood Village Shopping Center, where he suffered a fatal heart attack.
