Looks like construction of The Wharf— a huge mixed-use development planned for the Southwest waterfront—will begin in March. UrbanTurf reports that developers made the announcement at an ANC 6D meeting last night.

A partnership between D.C. and Hoffman-Madison Waterfront, the $2 billion, 3.2 million square-foot project will overhaul a portion of Southwest D.C. with “an active, mixed-use urban riverfront that showcases distinctive cultural destinations, and build upon the existing, strong waterfront community,” a website states. That includes new housing (650 apartments, 225 condos, and a 280-room hotel), 140,000 square feet of retail, 220,000 square feet of office space, 135,000 square feet of cultural space, and 1,325 underground parking spaces, according to UrbanTurf.

Plans to begin construction were originally slated for January, but were delayed due to permit issues. Hoffman-Madison Waterfront says the groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for late March, but the construction won’t seriously get underway until June, according to UrbanTurf. The first phase of the The Wharf is projected to be completed in summer of 2017.
