>> David Ornette Cherry‘s father, Don Cherry, was a key figure in the development of avant-garde jazz as a result of his work with saxophonist Ornette Coleman. The younger Cherry has evolved into a relentlessly exploratory musician in his own right and will be at Union Arts on Thursday with his Ensemble for Improvisers. 8 p.m. BYOB. $10 admission.

>> Sharon Isbin is a classical guitar master and for her latest album, Guitar Passions, she teamed up with other world class guitarists to explore the intersection between European classical and other international influences. Jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan and Brazilian artist Romero Lubambo will join Isbin for tomorrow night’s 8 p.m. concert at Strathmore. Tickets $26 to $70.
>> Some of the area’s best musicians will be performing 9 and 10:30 p.m. sets at Dukem Jazz on Thursday. Vocalist Heidi Martin has assembled a band that includes guitarist John Lee, bassist Kris Funn and drummer John Lamkin. No cover.

>> Trumpeter Luke Brandon performs with the Airmen of Note, the Air Force’s premiere big band, and he also plays regularly with the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra. He will lead a small group on Saturday at Twins Jazz. Tickets $16 plus food and drink minimum.
>> Gia Mora, a.k.a. Einstein’s Girl, brings her cabaret act to the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club on Saturday. The show is part stand-up, part jazz standards and somehow ties it all together with Einstein’s ruminations on theoretical physics. 8 p.m. Tickets $25 plus food and drink minimum.
>> The famed Newport Jazz Festival is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and is commemorating the occasion with a tour featuring jazz all-stars who launched their careers at the storied festival. Now 60, a program taking place on Sunday at the Music Center at Strathmore, features Anat Cohen, Karrin Allison, Randy Brecker, Mark Whitfield, Peter Martin, Clarence Penn and Larry Grenadier. 7 p.m. Tickets $17 to $57.
