For half of the game, all seemed lost for the Swiss women’s hockey team.

In their match against Sweden on Thursday for the Bronze Medal, the Swedes led them 2-0 for a majority of the match. But then, soon after the third period started, the Swiss team scored two goals in a five minute period, quickly tying the score up. Momentum was shifting. But it wasn’t until 24-year-old Jessica Lutz—a barista at The Coffee Bar, one of the city’s chic new coffee shops—scored again, giving the Swiss team the first lead of the night. The Swiss team would go on to score two more goals, trumping the Swedes with a 4-3 win, but it was Lutz’ goal that turned the game around and ultimately led to their victory and a Bronze Medal at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi.

While Lutz and her teammates were soaking in their victory in Sochi, all of her co-workers were celebrating at the Shaw coffee shop: One of their own had just won an Olympic medal.

“She already said she’s going to wear it around at work,” Cait Lowry, owner and operator of The Coffee Bar told DCist. “We’re definitely going to throw a party when she comes back,” she said. Lutz, who is also a student in D.C., started working at The Coffee Bar in March of last year. “She had just moved back from Switzerland and when I interviewed she talked about how she just happened to be on the Swiss National Women’s Hockey Team,” Lowry says.

But while her boss and co-workers knew there was an Olympic future for Lutz, not many of her customers had any idea. “We have a couple customers that play hockey and she would always say ‘Oh, maybe we can go and play together,'” Lowry says, “But I don’t think anybody had any idea about how good and how serious she was.”

Right now, Lutz is still in Sochi and she plans to travel around Europe with her family for a little bit after the games are over. Lowry’s been communicating with Lutz via email and social media and says she isn’t exactly sure when she’ll be back to work, maybe late March. When she does return to The Coffee Bar, however, she’ll have quite an excited crowd there to welcome her back.
