It seems like Chain & The Gang—the current musical project of D.C. punk legend Ian Svenonious (Nation of Ulysses, The Make-Up)—changes its lineup with each new moon. But that’s intentional, the band is more of a collaboration between Svenonious and a rotating cast of local musicians rather than regular rock group. Still, as each new iteration of Chain & The Gang emerges, one thing is constant: They still rip.
That much is evident in “Devitalize,” the new singe from the group that premiered earlier on Vice’s music blog, Noisey. The song, off their forthcoming LP, Minimum Rock ‘n’ Roll, is classic Svenonious: a two-minute fuzzy barn burner that that takes aim at the city’s gentrification. “I wanna devitalize the city/I wanna devitalize the air/I wanna devitalize just about everywhere,” he sings with a subtle snarl. The city maybe rapidly changing, but one thing remains constant: D.C. punks.
Minimum Rock ‘n’ Roll is due out April 15 via Radical Elite records.
