We’re a little more than a month away from the April primary and endorsements are flying out left and right. Today, At-Large Councilmember landed an endorsement from the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400 union.
In a press release announcing the endorsement, Mark Federici, UFCW Local 400 President, said that “Councilmember Orange is a fighter for D.C.’s working families with a high-road economic development strategy based on lifting our people and neighborhoods up, rather than sending us on a race to the bottom through poverty jobs.” The release also mentioned Orange’s Minimum Wage Amendment Act of 2013, which will increases the District’s minimum wage to $11.50 per hour by 2016 as well as his work “[securing] five days of sick leave, with pay, at the minimum wage rate for tipped wage employees,” among other things, as reasons for the union’s endorsement of Orange.
Meanwhile, Mayor Gray got another union endorsement—his fifth so far—in the form of one from the D.C. Building Trades Council, which compromises an alliance of 15 local construction trade unions.
The D.C. Building Trades Council, an alliance of 15 local construction trade unions, has endorsed District of Columbia Mayor Vince Gray for reelection. “Everyday, hardworking men and women build, maintain, repair and improve District infrastructure,” Gray said in a release. “The Building Trades Council is a strong advocate for its members as well as policies that create a robust economy. By working together, government and organized labor create good jobs. I am proud and honored to have the support of the Building Trades Council.”
